Description

Its blue, red and yellow colours come from the 2020 Red Bull Racing RB16 car. The chronograph lets you time events independently of the time display.

DESIGN

The blue, red, and yellow colours set this Formula 1 watch apart. On the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Special Edition CAZ101AB.BA0842, they come from the team's 2020 RB16 car. Blue runs across the dial and aluminium bezel, with a yellow chronograph hand and red details bringing the racing colours into the display.

Look closer, and there is more than colour separating the dial's elements. The blue surface has a sunray finish, while the dark counters have circular grooves. That contrast helps distinguish the timing displays from the main dial. Silver-coloured hands and hour markers show the time, with the date tucked in around 4 o'clock.

The fixed tachymeter bezel adds another connection to timing and speed. Around it, brushed and polished steel surfaces give the round case contrasting finishes. Turn the watch over, and the collaboration continues on the solid steel back, with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing branding above a chequered motif.

FUNCTIONS

You can use the chronograph to time an event independently of the ordinary time display. The central timing hand counts elapsed seconds, supported by a tenths-of-a-second display and a 30-minute counter. Press the upper pusher to start and stop, then the lower pusher to reset once timing has stopped. You can also stop and restart to add intervals; just start with the timing hands at zero.

The tachymeter takes that elapsed-time measurement a step further. Start timing as you pass the beginning of a measured kilometre, then stop at the end and read the bezel against the central timing hand. If the kilometre takes 30 seconds, the scale shows an average speed of 120 km/h. Time a mile instead and the reading is in miles per hour, provided the interval falls within the printed scale.

The Swiss quartz movement runs on a battery, so you do not need to wind it. To set the date or time, unscrew the crown and pull it to the appropriate setting position, then push it back and screw it down afterwards. Battery life was quoted at approximately two years at launch, with an end-of-life indicator to signal replacement. The original water-resistance rating is 200m, but have the watch's water resistance checked before relying on that rating today.

ON THE WRIST

At 43mm, this is a watch to consider if you want a larger case diameter. The steel case and bracelet carry the metal construction around the wrist, while the yellow timing hand, contrasting counters and blue tachymeter bezel give it a clearly sporty appearance. If you are unsure about the size, try it on before deciding how it suits your wrist.

The bracelet closes with a folding safety clasp and includes a driver's extension. That extension provides extra length to wear the watch over a racing suit; it should not be confused with fine adjustment for everyday fit. For everyday wear, make sure the bracelet is sized to sit securely on your wrist.

PRICE GUIDE

Introduced in February 2020, the CAZ101AB.BA0842 is discontinued. If you want a similar Red Bull Racing chronograph new today, the later Formula 1 Chronograph x Red Bull Racing CAZ101AL.BA0842 has a Malaysian retail price of RM10,050. It keeps the 43mm steel case, bracelet and team colours, with a revised dial design.

Pre-owned asking prices in Malaysia and overseas are approximately RM3,700–RM6,500, including past advertised prices.
